You actually picked the best four...there was no way I was going to listen to the woman who listed Sade and Corinne Bailey-Ray as her main influences Laughing !! But OWL CITY is the only one who appears quite interesting out of the others.

Of those four then:

ELLIE GOULDING
Very good, saw her support LITTLE BOOTS but will probably not capture my heart as I found her stuff a bit KT Tunstall with a bit of electro sparkle thrown in

DELPHIC
Seem them twice supporting LITTLE BOOTS (her again) and LA ROUX. Great, multi-instrumental stage presentation, good mix of synths, guitar and percussion. In some ways, it's like A CERTAIN RATIO gone right! One truly great song called "Counterpoint" which is like ORBITAL meets NEW ORDER but their stuff does appear to be based around grooves and jamming rather than songs

HURTS
"Wonderful Life" is the best unreleased MySpace song in 2009 but the whole myth around them is solely based on that song. But it's all promising, Popjustice have been very enthusiatic and I trust them...after all, they were right about LITTLE BOOTS, LA ROUX, MARSHEAUX, LADYHAWKE, LADY GAGA (they said they were good!) and STEREOPHONICS (they said they were crap!)

MARINA & THE DIAMONDS
I've heard most of the songs on her debut album via various sources, plus other excellent songs like "Seventeen" which will not be on the album and she is a talented lady. The electrofied 'Starsmith remix' of "I Am Not A Robot" is one of my fave tracks of the year. Quite barking mad but that's how I like them! I LUV this girl Razz

I thought they were the best 4, and would be of the most appeal to others on here. And no I didn't listen to the woman who listed Sade and Corinne Bailey-Ray as her main influences either Laughing

I 1st saw Ellie Goulding on TV last week with the “Under the Sheets” video on NME TV, I have since heard that she is working with Starsmith who did that superb “I Am Not a Robot” remix (definitely one of the years top tracks).

Delphic only found them last week as well through a Youtube subscription. Love the Video for “Doubt”.

I was quite surprised to see Hurts on the list, because they have only 1 song. Even though it is a bloody good one.

Not heard “Seventeen”, but I have heard the Marina & the Diamonds stuff on Myspace and Youtube. Sounds very promising for the album next year

Delphic are 3rd.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8441316.stm

I have a feeling that Marina might win this.
Or maybe its wind Laughing

I'm pleased Delphic were so high as it seems to reflect the trend of last year's BBC Sound list for quality pop and in the majority of cases, a smattering of synth as opposed to dull indie bands and plastic soul divas Very Happy

The Top Six in 2009 were:

1. Little Boots
2. White Lies
3. Florence and the Machine
4. Empire of the Sun
5. La Roux
6. Lady GaGa

If it's a similar group of tastemakers doing the judging, then I'm gonna stick my neck out and say the Top 2 will be Marina & The Diamonds and Ellie Goulding with Marina being No1!

With Ellie having already snared the BRITS Critics Choice Award for 2010 (Florence won in 2009), I think Marina stands a good chance as I think she is far superior songwriting talent based on the tracks I heard so far. I'm as excited about her stuff as I was when I first discovered Little Boots.

So Wookie, if this all comes true, you'll have done a grand job picking out the Top 4 Wink

Well Marina & the Diamons take 2nd place.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8437856.stm

So fingers crossed for Ellie Goulding to take the prize.

I had forgotten that she had already won the Brits choice award.

Three down, one to go Wink

Actually, I'm sorta pleased Marina was 2nd cos now the pressure's off and she can just get on with things. Ellie Goulding, if she wins, on the other hand will get all the unnecessary grief which Little Boots seemed to have last year!

Once upon a time, the BBC Sound Poll said nothing to me about my life but now, it seems to totally reflect it Laughing

Just ordered Delphic's album which is out next Monday so will be interesting to hear how that's turned out

Well Ellie has won Smile

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8445641.stm

Who would have thought that I am a "tastemaker". Surprised Laughing

I think you are right about the grief and pressure that goes with winning.
I suppose it depends on the individual as to how they cope with it.

It's good to see electro getting all this attention in the mainstream media. Cool

Thanks for the Delphic info, didn't realise the album was out so soon.

Exactly what I thought too - I could see how she'd be big in her own right but stylistically not my thang.

The Delphic album is up on Spotify now btw:

Liking the second half of the DELPHIC album (which seems to be more 'song' based) more at the moment. "Halcyon", "Submission" and the remixed "Counterpoint" being the highlights

I saw Marina & The Diamondslast Friday at The Tabernacle and she was fab. She came on in this lovely green gown like a Greek Goddess and all these girls were screaming for her!

Quite amazing that everyone was singing along to "I Am Not A Robot" and going 'cuckoo' to "Mowgli's Road". Her two new songs "Oh No" and "Rootless" are really good. The set was far too short but it was only a tenner! So I'm going again in May Very Happy
